Courtney Gains, born on August 22, 1965, is an American actor renowned for his memorable portrayal of “Malachai” in the 1984 horror film, Children of the Corn.

Gains developed an interest in acting during his time in primary school, where he was an active member of the school’s drama club. He started with smaller roles in school plays and gradually worked his way up to more significant parts.

He carried on with acting when he entered high school. Additionally, during his high school years, he was physically active as he played football. After graduating in 1983, Gains decided to concentrate on his acting career and did not pursue further education at college.

His maiden film appearance was in 1984 when he portrayed “Malachai” in the critically acclaimed supernatural folk horror film, Children of the Corn, which is closely based on the eponymous short story penned by Stephen King. During the same year, Gains starred alongside Grant Cramer and Gary Wood in the comedy film Hardbodies, which follows three mature gentlemen attempting to attract ladies at the beach with the help of a younger man.

In 1985, Gains appeared in two award-winning films: Lust in the Dust and Secret Admirer. He made a brief appearance in the drama film Ratboy in 1986 and subsequently portrayed the supporting characters, “Goose Trammel” in Winners Take All and Kenneth Wurman in Can’t Buy Me Love.

Some of his subsequent roles included the 1989 black comedy, The Burbs; the British-American war film, Memphis Belle, in 1990; and the action film, Behind Enemy Lines, in 1997.

In 1998, Gains played the role of “Ernie” in the mystery-thriller film, Shadow of Doubt. The same year saw him co-star with Charlie Sheen in the action crime thriller, No Code of Conduct. In 2002, he portrayed “Sheriff Wade” in the critically acclaimed romantic comedy, Sweet Home Alabama, and the following year he was cast as “Lorenzo the Black Hand “in the romantic crime mystery comedy, National Lampoon Presents Dorm Daze. In 2006, he made an appearance in the psychological thriller, The Phobic, and four years later he played a cameo in the horror film, The Quiet Ones.

Some of his notable performances in subsequent years included the horror film Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead in 2011, the 2013 comedy The House Across the Street, and the war drama Field of Lost Shoes in 2014. Three of Gain’s most recent movie roles have been in the supernatural film, Camp Cold Brook; the comedy horror, Hell’s Kitty (both in 2018); and the horror film, Candy Corn, in 2019.
