Domicakes Thiem and Ass-Picker Nadal - one set all.
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 600 | June 22, 2019 12:48 PM |
Thiem has lost it completely. Playing so bad.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 9, 2019 3:09 PM |
And Nadal up 3-0 in the third. Thiem really needed to stay with him in the 3rd. I'm not watching, just following the score online. Is Thiem gassed?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 9, 2019 3:10 PM |
If Thiem is going to tank the 3rd set, he really needs to at least make Rafa expend more energy so that Thiem will at least have a shot in winning the 4th and 5th.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 9, 2019 3:11 PM |
R2 he might be. He's trying to pull the trigger quickly and making lots of errors.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 9, 2019 3:12 PM |
Gigi Salmon on Radio Roland Garros has just shattered my eardrum. Otherwise I love their commentary. Courtney Nguyen and Nick McCarvel are a hoot.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 9, 2019 3:13 PM |
I think Thiem can win the French open......when Rafa retires.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 9, 2019 3:13 PM |
Have we ever needed a fourth thread for the French Open before?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 9, 2019 3:16 PM |
Will this go to five sets or will it be four?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 9, 2019 3:16 PM |
oh nice, Rafa's mommy is there! Now he doesn't have to call her 3 times a night.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 9, 2019 3:18 PM |
R9, if Rafa wins this 3rd set and takes an early lead in the 4th, it's over.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 9, 2019 3:19 PM |
Nadal wlil dominate Dominic.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 9, 2019 3:19 PM |
I want Dominic to dominate me.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 9, 2019 3:20 PM |
Hoe many more will Nadal win not including today? 3? 4?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 9, 2019 3:20 PM |
Jesus, I smell another Rafa win. What the hell happened to Thiem in the 3rd being down 5-1 in about 15 mins?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 9, 2019 3:21 PM |
#1 i turn down the sound WHENEVER i her mcenroe and his coattail carillo "ahem" commentating! a player who should have been banned from the sport for his actions who thinks his OPINION is all knowing and not opinion but FACT and a woman who if she wasn't buddy buddy with a great player that mcenroe was, would be lucky to be teaching tennis at some snobby upstate new york tennis club but now she's a "tennis expert/historian" broadcaster... OH YEAH, and the man whose in the commentary booth for NBC, also has no idea what he is talking about stating that novak was going for the same thing that laver did in 62 and 69? uh, no, novak was hoping to hold all 4 majors at the same time, NOT in a grand slam calendar year!.. go back NBC guy to your last minute notes will you otherwise shut up!
#2 here we go again: nadal in trouble decides he JUST HAS TO go to the bathroom after that 2nd set, taking how long 5 to 10 minutes? and coming back on court all refreshed including taking the time to run water thru his hair and combing it! is that how it works? ultimate mr. gamesmanship!
#3 has nadal ever been checked for e.p.o.? i refuse to believe a man who is 33 years old (ancient in tennis terms) with ALL THOSE INJURIES (allegedly) over the years, the grinding way he plays is able to outslug and outlast guys 5, 10, 15 years younger then him on the most grueling enduring surface that being clay!...I CALL B.S.
#4 ya think maybe thiem just might want to return serve differently seeing that he gets what 1 point out of every 14 or so returning serve! light bulb time! it ain't working your returning game!..
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 9, 2019 3:21 PM |
I want to dominate Dominic.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 9, 2019 3:22 PM |
yes, I was wondering if Nadal was on PEDs.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 9, 2019 3:26 PM |
Thiem just had a tough 5 setter. Souped up Nadal had easy matches. Still rooting for Thiem.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 9, 2019 3:26 PM |
So far, my prediction is holding true.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 9, 2019 3:27 PM |
HOW is it fair, that for no fault of his own because of the rain and wind, that thiem has to play the semis finishing it off and the very next day play the finals? it's not nadal's fault of course, but it's also not thiem's either! regardless of the fans, it should have been played tomorrow monday and of course all tickets valid...
and while we are at it, HOW RIDICULOUS IS IT that THEE french open (as well as other clay tournaments) DO NOT HAVE HAWKEYE? it's a grand slam tournament! it's the 21st century! and gosh knows the powers that be can afford it! and yet, we are still hoping on the 100% accuracy of linespeople for a mark, the right mark! really? REALLY?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 9, 2019 3:31 PM |
How does Thiem have such a big ass with those skinny legs?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 9, 2019 3:33 PM |
R22 he asked Kim Kardashian where to go? Jk
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 9, 2019 3:37 PM |
#22 i wouldn't say his legs are "skinny" i would say athletic looking.. all i know is when can we get a old school return to super short shorts from the 70's! then we could see some major legs skin and see whose really got the great legs!...
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 9, 2019 3:37 PM |
broken at the start of 4th set
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 9, 2019 3:38 PM |
R22 I think it's anything but sexy. Also how are you guys calling Mladenovic ugly and not Thiem? Have you seen him in the face? Far from pretty
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 9, 2019 3:38 PM |
Has anyone started a petition for the only thing that matters i.e. getting Borna to do the ESPN body issue?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 9, 2019 3:40 PM |
#27.... thiem has a boyish face and pretty eyes and mladenovic when made up is quite attractive even bordering on stunning, kind of like petra when she is all glammed up..
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 9, 2019 3:41 PM |
I actually find Mladenovic quite pretty, certainly prettier than Thiem. Too many unforced errors from Thiem unfortunately. Please Lord make Tsitsipas win Wimbledon, or Zverev or even Kyrgios.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 9, 2019 3:42 PM |
Please god make Kyrgios quit tennis altogether
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 9, 2019 3:44 PM |
Thiem may be OK looking if he pins his ears back.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 9, 2019 3:49 PM |
I'm watching on NBC and I don't understand the point system in tennis, but my God, Nadal has some beautiful legs.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 9, 2019 3:50 PM |
R29 I mean, I think Borna is just straight up the most handsome guy on the tour. Possibly the hottest tennis player the ATP has seen. Ruud, Berrettini, Fucsovics, Pouille are pretty cute. I just can't seem to find anything attractive about Thiem. Maybe that's just me.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 9, 2019 3:50 PM |
Wasn't it Moya's ex=girlfriend (also a tennis player) who said she broke up with him because all he liked to do is play video games and masturbate all day long?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 9, 2019 3:50 PM |
Thiem is delicious. I’ll happily comfort him after his loss.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 9, 2019 3:52 PM |
I've gotten to the point where I even like Dominic's ears. And he doesn't have skinny legs by any stretch.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 9, 2019 3:52 PM |
Compare and contrast Domi's and Rafa's asses please.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 9, 2019 3:53 PM |
He really is beautiful, R34! And I do love how he seems very comfortable with himself and he has a great sense of humour!
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 9, 2019 3:53 PM |
Nadal running away with it in the 4th. My nightmare is coming true. It looks inevitable that Nadal will win his 12th French Open. Please tennis gods, be merciful and make this his last.
I hate Nadal and always have, but hats off to the guy. He's one of the fiercest fighters on the court I've ever seen. He shows up and gets the job done.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 9, 2019 3:54 PM |
R35 he was also cheating in him other than masturbate and playing computer games.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 9, 2019 3:54 PM |
I was going to say that Thiem is doing the tennis equivalent of presenting hole right now, but that was a good comeback from 0-40.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 9, 2019 3:55 PM |
i would add krachanov and andujar as the best looking guys on the tour, along with a few others if i think of it....isn't there that new dark haired guy caren whose been playing well whose good looking too?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 9, 2019 3:56 PM |
r20, credit where credit is due, yes you did. I wasn't sure if he had the spurt in it to pull it off, but as I said on the other thread, he was burning way too much energy, even over cheering every point he won and over dramatizing every point he lost.
r21, having hawkeye, we've already seen, would've cost Thiem. Two of his "winning" serves were out in the first two sets.
He's down a break. If he pulls this out, props to him, but Rafa smells blood.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 9, 2019 3:56 PM |
What is all that jewelry on Thiem's left hand? Too many gifts from Rolex?
I "love" how Rolex has anointed Thiem the next big thing "for years to come" as if he's the chosen successor to Federer.
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 45 | June 9, 2019 4:02 PM |
Thiem has almost no thighs and zero calf definition. He has little boy legs under that huge ass

His arms as well, r46. They're not as bad as Berdych's gumby legs, but he needs to work them.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 9, 2019 4:07 PM |
Two breaks down. He's spent.
I wonder what the party with the GF will be like. She has a slam trophy, not him.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 9, 2019 4:09 PM |
Next year Thiem, always next year. Jk Nadal will win it till he's 40.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 9, 2019 4:11 PM |
Nadal has a beautiful body, too bad he is messed up mentally with the OCD and he has to call his mommy 3 times a night, to remind her about something.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | June 9, 2019 4:11 PM |
R39 if you're talking about Coric I absolutely agree. He also seems very friendly and open with his fans online, even his gay fans. R43 I'm not the biggest fan of his face but he surely has a great body. I would also say Verdasco, Berdych and a rather unknown french guy, Jonathan Eysseric.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 9, 2019 4:13 PM |
Men's tennis is DEAD at least on clay until someone can beat Nadal
how fucking boring. Thiem already had the experience of reaching the RG final last year and he didn't seem to learn anything
by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 9, 2019 4:14 PM |
So over the top. You've won 12 of these. Its impressive but chill out.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 9, 2019 4:14 PM |
12 French Opens. Wow. Glad I stayed home to watch this match.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 9, 2019 4:14 PM |
R53 at least he took a set?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | June 9, 2019 4:14 PM |
I don't think he's crying. He's sweating buckets. And the stupid camera cut away with him leaving the court shirtless.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | June 9, 2019 4:16 PM |
Nadal want's ever to know that his butt > then Thiem's butt.
Kiki's teeth are disgusting. Her face is so hard and she's a bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | June 9, 2019 4:17 PM |
Nadal was emotional for a few seconds. He definitely shed some happy tears, he had his shirt covering his face. face was red when shirt removed from face.
Now he's back after going to locker room to change his top.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | June 9, 2019 4:17 PM |
Ok, Xicsa was there with her wife.

by Anonymous | reply 66 | June 9, 2019 4:18 PM |
Time to change the topic again, haha. Does anyone sense the Borna-Novak chemistry or is it just my wishful thinking? Here are some examples I found
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 67 | June 9, 2019 4:18 PM |
I'm happy for Rafa, he's a very nice guy. Not asshole like many top players of the past.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | June 9, 2019 4:19 PM |
how anyone can say men's tennis is in a great state now is beyond comprehension. You have 30-somethings dominating the slams. NO ONE can break through. I'm sure Djokovic will magically find his way again at Wimbledon or Federer will be up for another win (since he surprised in Miami).
I mean ATP slams are beyond boring at this point. It's not going to look good if no one new can win a slam until the big 3 are retired.
and I don't want them to be injured or retired. I want the younger guys to start beating them. This is pathetic
by Anonymous | reply 69 | June 9, 2019 4:19 PM |
Thiem is just not there mentally. no confidence. gives up too easily.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | June 9, 2019 4:20 PM |

on to the grass. All the main draws are out. Surprisingly there are more ATP top 20 names playing than WTA this first week
by Anonymous | reply 73 | June 9, 2019 4:21 PM |
It's more than just a physical game. You have to be tough mentally, in all sports! You have to believe! None of the young players have it. Just look at that wack job from Aus.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | June 9, 2019 4:21 PM |

Lucky Johnny Mac saw Nadal naked in the locker room during US Open last year!
by Anonymous | reply 76 | June 9, 2019 4:22 PM |
Nadal: How can anyone so hot be so unsexy? Is it me? It's like all the parts are there but together it doesn't work. Maybe it's just the OCD and the knowledge of what it would take to get this guy off. If he has 30 things he has to do before hitting a serve there must be 500 things he has to do to have sex.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | June 9, 2019 4:24 PM |
Mary Carillo just said on NBC that he personally thanks the tournament employees and balls kids after his press conference. He’s beloved at Roland Garros. What a great guy! Love him or hate him but Rafa is a class act!
by Anonymous | reply 81 | June 9, 2019 4:24 PM |
R71 he speaks a weird (bad) mix of French and spanish. Just like he does in Italian
by Anonymous | reply 83 | June 9, 2019 4:25 PM |
R67 perhaps the fact that I despise Djokovic and find him phony as hell is clouding my judgement, but no, I don't see that happening in a million years.

by Anonymous | reply 86 | June 9, 2019 4:28 PM |

Rafa's sister and her wife are wearing matching diamonds, their outfits are as coordinated as always. Awesome speeches by both players.

R34 I nominate Joao Sousa and Denis Kudla.
Popsicle is pretty cute but it would appear that he’s kinda “deplorable”...
by Anonymous | reply 94 | June 9, 2019 4:40 PM |
Nadal's French is terrible for someone who's won RG TWELVE TIMES. Especially as he speaks Catalan which is basically a mix of Spanish and French. I don't think he's very intelligent. Even Serena speaks better French than he does and she's a complete dunce.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | June 9, 2019 4:41 PM |
You're right, but he gets credit for trying. No,not so smart, he's as basic as they come which makes him easy to relate to.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | June 9, 2019 4:45 PM |
R95 Serena is not a dunce at all. Oracene made sure Serena and Venus got a good education when they were growing up.

I didn't watch the final, and I'm glad given the outcome. For those who watched it, what happened in the 3rd and 4th sets? Given the score, I'd say it was probably a combination of Nadal playing well and Thiem making too many errors. TIA for some info from anyone who actually watched the match.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | June 9, 2019 5:48 PM |
R115 pretty much. Nadal took it to another level and Thiem was pressing to no avail. He made several games close. He also seemed very tired, not surprised since he's played 4 days straight.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | June 9, 2019 5:52 PM |
But Thiem’s ass was still perky.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | June 9, 2019 5:54 PM |
About asking if the final could be delayed because of semi-final play the day before: these guys are professional athletes making beaucoup bucks for playing a game; suck it up or change 'careers'.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | June 9, 2019 5:57 PM |
Is Thiem’s ass all that huge though? Is it as big as Rafa’s now? At Rafa’s peak, his ass was even larger.

by Anonymous | reply 121 | June 9, 2019 6:17 PM |
yeah the schedule and draw worked out perfectly for Nadal
no excuse for Thiem though. He should be at his physical peak and he's been showing his best form this year. Mentally he's not ready for a slam. I think it's time to look at #NextGen. Thiem will probably win RG at some point when Nadal is like 37

If Nadal overtook Gramps in most GS wins(very probable), will he be considered the GOAT?
by Anonymous | reply 131 | June 9, 2019 7:29 PM |
#131, don't think so since the vast portion of his total is on 1 surface.. as it is right now? 12 out of 18 are at the french, that leaves a ratio of only 6 more between the other 3.. ALSO he nadal has had more bad losses and early exits at the other grand slams as well....
i think the one that everyone needs to worry about that being roger and rafa is novak.. he's younger, healthier, has more even of a grand slam totals then rafa and stands at 15...
by Anonymous | reply 132 | June 9, 2019 7:38 PM |
R107 That's hilarious.
Poor Kevin Anderson is about to take a BIG tumble out of the top 10 (potentially Isner too) after Wimbledon. Which would leave an opportunity for a top 10 debut for someone like a Medvedev, or beauties Coric and Basilashvili.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | June 9, 2019 7:42 PM |
[quote]it's not nadal's fault of course, but it's also not thiem's either!
It was Djokovic's fault. Rafa and Roger played through the "hurricane" and got their match done like a couple of professionals. Djokovic and Thiem get out there in the same conditions, Djoko starts grousing about the "hurricane" and demanding that the tournament official come out and all his other blather and then play is stopped. Djoko is just so distasteful. Would have worked in everybody's best interests to just have risen to the occasion and played through like a professional and take what comes, just like Roger and Rafa did.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | June 9, 2019 8:00 PM |
So so so glad Thiem booted Djokovic out of the tournament.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | June 9, 2019 8:05 PM |
how long before rafa is "cough cough" hurt again and can't play or because of said "injury" loses early at the grass warm-up tournaments or at wimbledon and doesn't play the summer hard court season! would have MORE respect for him if he just admitted he didn't play these tournaments ON PURPOSE because he wouldn't do well as opposed to i'm ALWAYS INJURED! (and yet, when i come back from "injury" i play like nothing happened and immediately start winning again without a ounce of rustiness or lack of aerobic conditioning!)..
by Anonymous | reply 136 | June 9, 2019 8:15 PM |
And in a bizarre twist of fate, R134, play went on at the other RG courts, miraculously unscathed by the calamitous hurricane.

R132: I'm not that sure.
First i'm not sure Nadal reach 20 GS. He is a threat at any GS if he reach the final stages but in Wimbledon he is very vulnerable on the first rounds if he face someone with a big serve or a good grass court player. On the US Open he will face way more opposition on the early rounds which means reaching the final rounds with more hours of play. He can win those extra GS but it's not a sure shot.
Of course there's Roland Garros but sooner or later his body will put a stop to his career and every year will be more difficult.
Novak is younger, but above all is healthier, but he is 5 GS behind Federer because he started to win GS later (not the first one but he spent three years between the first and the second), and five GS are a lot of GS (you can be a legend just winning 5 GS). Right now he is the big favourite to win everything but thing could change overnight. There are young players who will be a real threat soon, and i doubt next year will be all about big 3.
Nadal and Djokovic proved to be reliable players so they could do it, but Federer could win Wimbledon and in that case things will be even more difficult

TENNIS IS EXTREMELY "CONNECTIONS", "WHO YOU KNOW" AND "NEPOTISM" perhaps more then any other professional sport! tennis channel hired that young amitraj guy who is probably the son or grandson of vijay or another of the 1970s playing amitraj brothers and his "job" is to get paid to travel around the world, attending tennis events and interviewing players on their lives and off court activities! NOW THAT IS A CAREER TO HAVE! AND YET? his qualifications, resume, experience is/are???..

R131, that's an interesting question. If Nadal overtakes Federer, but it's by winning three more French Opens, then his total is far too stacked at one tournament and one particular surface. If he overtakes Federer by winning another Wimbledon, US Open, or Aussie Open in addition to the French, then probably most would consider him GOAT. However, Federer also has more impressive runs to later rounds of Grand Slams. He's got the most consecutive semis, most consecutive QFs, etc. Federer also has more consecutive weeks at #1. If it's 21-20 Nadal but because he wins three more French Opens, the debate will rage on.

Jnteresting turnouts for the grass warm-up events this week: Stuttgart has the top three Canadians FAA and Raonic returning from injury along with countryman Shapo, then Monfils, the Flopos brothers, Medvedev, Basil, Karen, Struff, Pouille, and Kyrgios while Hertogenbosch has Tsitsipas, Borna, Tiafoe, de Minaur, Gasquet, Sousa, Goffin, Garin, Humbert, Haase and PHH.

The women's doubles final was great. Loved the men's final when Kiki yelled out "time" to Nadal. Nadal knows how to play the game and skirt the rules to suit him. Yes, a nice guy but can be a shit. So what he is close to his mother. I think he has more serious issues than that, especially with his OCD.

R134 are you a loon? Scheduling Roger on the 1st Sunday and Roger/Rafa played their qf's on Tuesday and missed the weather. They were both given advantageous scheduling but it was mostly Roger. He asked to play the 1st Sunday. He'll get the same cushy deal at Wimbledon and the US Open. Novak had every right to ask for the match to be postponed. The officials AGREED, so did Thiem.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | June 10, 2019 6:56 AM |
Thiem's breakdown was mental and emotional, not physical. The only physical problem was that he poured so much energy in trying to blast Rafa in the court in the first two sets he was spent, but he was still firing hard shots in the third and fourth without the control. Others said he had no choice but he's slightly more than 7 years younger than Nadal. He plays three sets of tennis days in a row all the time. He played two and a half sets on Saturday, again much of his own undoing as bungled the fifth set and let Djokovic back in it.
Case in point: He broke Nadal to take the 2nd set playing massive shots. He was broken in the first game of the third set on his own serve (at or near love, I think). You can't explain that breakdown on exhaustion. He even had a short break as Nadal took an off court break. His energy and confidence should not have dropped that badly in a matter of minutes. He just played one bad shot after another as Rafa made clear he was not going away and then got broken again. He gave up that set. He didn't play terribly in the fourth, it was one break, but he knew it was slipping away and lost focus after over celebrating and fist pumping every point he won in the 1st and 2nd and screaming and whining about every point he missed. You can't spend that much emotion over 2 hours of the first two sets and keep it up. It was an immature match.
Thiem will be 26 in a couple of months. He needs to work on pacing himself, not wasting emotion cheering, screaming, and moaning on court, and focusing on preparing himself for a five-set final, moving on after every point taking one at a time.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | June 10, 2019 9:01 AM |
I actually think Thiem's best chances to win a slam are at the US Open. Slower hard court (not unlike Indian Wells) and he was playing so well there last year. It's where a few of the non big 3 slams have been won (Cilic/Nishikori, Delpo, Wawrinka).
Nobody is beating Nadal on Chatrier in Best of 5 unless he's REALLY out of form. Maybe if they peak out of their minds, Djokovic or Wawrinka could do it.

Agree. At he moment, these are the only two players on clay who have a peak level equal to Rafa's. Peak Stan is as good as anyone in the game, he just can't sustain it for long. And the Fed match-up is bad for him, like Rafa is for Fed.

Nadal is so weird it's difficult for me watch him except during points. I feel voyeuristic, like staring at someone with a deformity. I notice that the cameramen try to avoid filming the whole routine. With all that OCD madness and the hair plugs and the bearded girl friend and uber private family, the injuries followed by miraculous wins, I find it odd that many of you consider him real and down to earth. Yet Djokovic, who by all evidence is leading an authentic life in public, warts and all, is considered fake.

R149 Minnen improved a lot this year. Right now she is defeating Barthel 75 20. I think she could reach top 100 this year, something that seemed impossible not so long ago.
In the Nadal/Federer goat discussion, Roger's fans seem to avoid the very clear h2h when they made the comparission.
In my opinion the three have weak points. Roger has the best numbers but he has negative h2h with his main rivals (against Rafa is pretty clear). And all of them have multiple GS, but Rafa has only one Australian open while Roger and Nole have only one Roland Garros.
Nole if he wants to have a chance needs to win Wimbledon and the US Open, in my opinion next year there'll be more players fighting for GS

I have my doubts with Felix. He had a fast rise, his clay season was decent but nothing remarkable, and his GS experience is near to zero. And of course there's the thing with instagram (generally it's never a good sign when you start to post pics of your girlfriend so early in the relationship). He didn't play on grass as a pro, and his junior results weren't that great (compared with his results on other surfaces), so i don't expectd that much of his grass season.
It would be interesting to watch if he is able to repeat the good results on hard courts. Anyway, he is very young and has a lot of time to get there

by Anonymous | reply 175 | June 10, 2019 5:25 PM |
R173: If my memory doesn't fail, Nadal and Federer played three times at Wimbledon with a 2-1 in Federer's favour, so it's not a sure shot that he would defeat Rafa if they play at Wimbledon, and even less given that courts are way slower on the second week
The fact that Nole has positive h2h against both brings a lot of questions about who is the goat.
It's clear that it's not as easy discussion as some fans think. Right now the GS titles make all the difference but if they end with the same things change a lot (and probably Nole is the one who will end with better numbers even if people like Kyrgios refuse to accept that)

Do we want to know why Thiem lost to Nadal? THIS is why. Is he a child? A bit dramatic? I say he’s not mature enough to be a Slam champion, based on this:
HIEM: ”NADAL STEPPED ON ME”
“He stepped on me,” said Thiem. “I’ve come from heaven [beating No.1 seed Novak Djokovic in the semi-final] to hell. You have to beat seven good players at this tournament, and one or two legends. That's a unique and also brutal thing.
“Beating Novak was one of my biggest victories in my career. I beat one of the biggest legends of our game. Not even 24 hours later, I have to step on court against another amazing legend of our game, against the best clay-court player of all time. I was feeling so happy, with such a good win, and now of course I lost.
"I failed to make my biggest dream in my tennis life come true.”

The difference is that the real professionals (Federer and Nadal) did not ask for their match to be postponed despite the conditions being essentially the same.
Djoko was losing and created a shitfest that ran for 24 hours, and then had the nerve to continue complaining through those 24 hours about something he himself created.
And no, the rain didn't start until 4 hours after Djoko through his weight around to have the Friday match suspended.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | June 10, 2019 6:33 PM |
You have absolutely no idea what Fedal asked for. Why couldn't they have started at 10am in order to ensure the second match could finish. (Because Roger and Rafa didn't want to), perhaps?
Conditions were predicted to start poorly and get worse. Rain arrived, just as was predicted 24 hours before on multiple weather websites. It was a predicable event that the rain would arrive when it did. You say -Conditions, essentially the same, No- Raining and Not Raining. Play was interrupted earlier, See the umbrellas in the picture when play stopped? You and your histrionics created the shit show. I agree with Becker. It's not that the big 3 aren't great, it's that nobody else is showing up mentally. I hope Tsitsi can finally do it since he seems the closest 'mentally' (though his game truly doesn't match up well against Rafa's).
Venus takes a WC into Birmingham next week. This will only be the 4th non-Wimbledon grass tournament she has ever played in her career (she played Eastbourne '97, '98, and 2011), which is crazy for someone who has won Wimbledon 5 times. Looks like grandma is gonna start gunning for that Olympics slot. Best of luck!

I can't stand Fed, but if you compare all the tournaments he and Rafa have entered Fed comes out way ahead because Rafa has a lot of bad losses. It's also what destroys the Navratilova was better than Evert myth - compare all the tournaments they played together from 75 on (when Martina 1st beat Chris at DC) and Chris comes out ahead significantly. Martina would lose to underwhelmers like Turnbull, Shriver, Newberry, Stove during the early years of her career. Evert always got to the final even if it was to get drummed by Martina. Would Chrissie's career look better had she lost more semis to the Mandlikova's and Sukova's of the world?

Nottingham JUST started playing opening round matches and it's 1pm local time on a Wednesday. There is more rain forecasted throughout the week.... this is starting to look like one of those rare tournaments that not only has to move indoors (where a Challenger tournament is already playing), but may be cancelled altogether.

Okay it actually is being played indoors on these ghetto ass courts.
You can tell all the grass court specialists like Vekic and Rybarikova are PISSED. They could have gone to Den Bosch etc. like Allison Riske and Flipkens.
Vekic actually seems like she's tanking against Jakupovic because she doesn't wanna do this all week lol.

I had to laugh at Eurosport's coverage of Nottingham. They've got one camera covering three indoor courts. I admire the effort but they should have just cancelled the tournament.
by Anonymous | reply 254 | June 13, 2019 11:04 AM |
I am watching Nottingham right now, and it is a cluster fuck. Hard courts, inside a centre that looks like a practice court at best. And, players who look like they would rather be somewhere else. I give it to the organisers for working to create something at least for the tournament.

Id say the players are not happy, but at least they are playing. I feel sorry for people who bought tickets etc, and travelled in etc. But, I give it up to the organisers who are at least trying. Yes, it looks like a cluster fuck, but its a trying cluster fuck.

This is another reason we don't need *ALL* the grass tournaments to be in the UK (especially a problem on wta). Even the big ITF events are there like Surbiton and Ilkley. Yes the grass slam is in London but it's not like every single clay warm up is in France. Is it just to give these scrubby UK players more WCs? It's not like any of them perform at Wimbledon anyway....
In the 3 years of Mallorca operating there has never been a rain delay. Perfect conditions, great location, and good crowds. Den Bosch has had problems in the distant past, but they're not exactly a tropical country and there's been only one SHORT rain delay this week, mostly sunny weather, and they have dealt with the delays a lot better. I don't know why Eurosport doesn't just buy the rights and show that instead of the Nottingham dinky little high school auditorium court.

The worst part is when a point gets interrupted because one of the balls from the court next to them flies into their court. Or the fact that you can hear grunts and shrieks and scores just as loudly from all the courts because there isn't proper microphoning set up. No hawkeye has been rough on them too. And I can literally count only 4 people watching from some fold-out chairs.
by Anonymous | reply 266 | June 13, 2019 1:32 PM |
Apparently there's a balcony behind the camera where people are watching from but this is such a huge fuck-up. I've seen more professional set-ups down my local park than this mess.

And Tsitsipas did exactly the same that on Roland Garros at libema open. He dominated the whole third set, had several break points, but when he served to stay in the match he was unable to connect a single first seve an lost the match at the first break point
by Anonymous | reply 268 | June 13, 2019 1:58 PM |
It's a fiasco in Nottingham and a big issue for the players hoping to get some grass court matches before Wimbledon but to cut the organizers a little slack, what else are they going to do? They can't stop the rain, nobody is going to pay for a roof over grass courts at an international level WTA event, and the players are already there, most of whom need the money and the ranking points. R264 has a good long-term solution but there also needs to be venues in Europe that will step up to the plate. The question is whether there are any who are willing to invest in the facilities to support a single International level WTA event. My guess is it would be a hard sell even if it were upgraded to a premiere event. Would Halle do it either before or after the men's tourney?
by Anonymous | reply 269 | June 13, 2019 1:59 PM |
It'd of course be nice to have a roof on the courts, but these small tournaments don't have anywhere near the budget to even dream of it. I think even of the Masters 1000 tournaments, only Madrid and Shanghai have it (and Paris which is indoors...).
by Anonymous | reply 270 | June 13, 2019 2:02 PM |
R269 To be fair to Nottingham this kind of continued bad weather is pretty rare here. I'm trying to think of a comparison where a tournament has had to switch to such a different surface in order to continue.
It's not a big enough venue or tournament to be able to justify a roof, but I can imagine being very annoyed if I signed up to a grass tournament and ended up playing on hard indoors.

Den Bosch: Bertens is GOATing against Alison Riske in the final. She won the first set 6-0 and is 1-0 up in the second, but fell and got a serious groin injury (currently off court). (A) what a terrible terrible run of luck for her after what happened at Roland Garros, and (B) how embarrassing for Riske if she finally wins her 2nd title via walkover despite not winning a single game in 7.
Nottingham SF: Garcia finally defeats Brady 3-6 6-3 6-3 after several rain delays and overnight interruptions. She will face Vekic in the final. Sacha Bajin and tennis journalists arguing on twitter as well, supposedly he was being a diva at the French Open too with the car service people.
Mallorca: Controversy arises as despite being a German-run tournament (with mostly German WCs), the German defending champion Tatjana Maria was not given a WC so won't be able to defend her title. She didn't enter the qualifying as she was in the Nottingham SF. Sharapova and Stosur are amongst WC recipients.

There are hundreds of houses flooded in Lincolnshire, we're not talking a couple of inches of rain here.

Den Bosch ATP final is a bit of a surprise: Borna Coric chokes to ageing baldy Adrian Mannarino (who has admittedly playing well all week). He won in a 3rd set tiebreaker. Young pornstached Aussie Jordan Thompson wins over #8 seed Richard Gasquet.
Mannarino or Thompson? Harder to predict than FAA vs Berettini in Stuttgart.
Birmingham draw is out and is stacked, even with withdrawals from Kvitova, Keys, etc. You have the top 3 players in the world (Osaka, Barty, Pliskova), big hitters like Sabalenka, Konta, Yastremska, Goerges, and Vekic. Great athletes in Sakkari, Martic and Svitolina, tricky grass courters like Hsieh and Strycova, and 5-time Wimbledon champ Venus lurking in the draw.
by Anonymous | reply 339 | June 16, 2019 11:15 AM |
Mannarino was totally losing against Goffin, but the elf decided to choke several times
It seems Kiki injury was not important because she is still playing, now the second set is way tighter than the first

by Anonymous | reply 340 | June 16, 2019 11:30 AM |
Strycova was supposed to retire last year, and was saying so at Fed cup, but is still playing? Anyone know why? Kiki Bertens having a tough time closing it out. Up to 5 match points lost and into a tie break.
by Anonymous | reply 341 | June 16, 2019 11:41 AM |
I think Strycova only retired from Fed Cup, not tennis.
by Anonymous | reply 342 | June 16, 2019 11:49 AM |
Yes, Strycova retired from Fed Cup, not the tour as a whole. I guess she realised she probably wasn't making Olympic singles anyway and has given enough for her country. Also she is VERY old for someone who plays the way she does. The other veterans aren't quite as 'physical' or have bigger groundies to help them out (Serena, Venus, Kuznetsova, Stosur), or in Hsieh's case don't really expend much energy or physicality in play.
Whereas Barbora is often diving for balls, scrapping all around the court, flying towards the net... a young counterpunchers game. She will have a chance to claim the #1 doubles ranking for the first time, as she doesn't defend much at Wimbledon. I think she and Vondrousova will play together at the Olympics (she and Hsieh play together on the main tour).
Bertens was playing so well after coming back from the injury (she was hitting all those amazing passing shots) but Riske has been taking so many RISKES (i'm sorry) and coming to the net on every point. Winning most of them as well... feels like watching Navratilova play in 1984.

Riske was amazing in sets 2 and 3 after such a terrible start (lost the first 7 games in a row).
This loss has got to hurt for Bertens playing at home, she hit more winners, more aces, and overall in the match won more games and even more points than Riske. She seemed physically okay after her fall and the rain delay but I think it scrambled her mentally.
Before today Riske was 1-6 in tour finals, and Kiki had won an incredible 9 out of 11. When she went up 6-0 4-1 and had a whopping FIVE match points, I don't think anybody would have expected Riske's comeback lol.

Both will probably avoid top 8 seeds at Wimbledon in the 3rd round
Both very close to a top 20 debut, that can happen next week.

Donna Vekic (a known choker in finals) also said "Finals are not for me. I'm going to lose again." to her coach after she lost the second set. Such a terrible attitude to have.
R375 Yes. Even other Germans like Petkovic got wildcards. Seems strange not to give one to the defending champ.

Great final in Nottingham, and a rare one for WTA (in that the #1 seed def. the #2 seed).
Garcia beats Vekic 2-6, 7-6, 7-6. The Frenchwoman had a rare week without her father to have on-court-coaching sessions with... I hope she realises how much better she plays without him (see: Fed Cup). She even won both her SF and F today.
Donna V - who earlier said "finals are not for me - i'm going to lose again" was absolutely beside herself. Annabel Croft was so nice to her when she was struggling to keep it together, and Garcia gave a beautiful speech to her too.

Better link with video. I know it was an emotional week, especially with the indoor hard / outdoor grass changes, but I have to wonder if Vekic has a strong enough mentality to really make a dent in the top 10. She's still young but she's missing that 'killer instinct' you need to get to the next step of the game.
At least the final was actually played on grass and with no interruptions. Garcia will face Azarenka in Mallorca opening round, and Vekic will face Barty in Birmingham. Tough break for both.

R375: Even with a big german population, mallorca is still in Spain so they got some wc to spanish players.
The fact that Paula Badosa (big diva attitude even she never was top 100, and known for retire again and again and again) receive a wc to the main draw but not Sara Sorribes or Aliona Bolsova says a lot about being sponsored by IMG and being marketable.

R385 The only time it has happened before is to Tsvetana Pironkova, in Sydney some years ago. Tatjana Malek/Maria must be PISSED. That's a lot of points coming off.
I understand that Sharapova is a big star but giving a convicted doper a WC instead of the defending champ with local appeal is a bad look.
And the one to Petkovic doesn't even make sense because Tatjana Maria is ranked about 20 places higher than her and just misses out on the cut anyway.
Tio Toni even gave Sabine Lisicki a qualifying WC, even though she's on a 10 match losing streak and is currently ranked #291. Yet nothing for the player who won this event last year?

I could have sworn Mahut has announced his retirement multiple times. But good for him (and PHH even though i'm not convinced by his 'girlfriend') to split up and rediscover some form. Mahut has always been dangerous on grass.
Svitolina has been injured and still recovering. She lost to Gasparyan who is good on grass and has a great one-handed backhand. I think this year is going to be a write-off for her. Other results from Birmingham include Hsieh taking out Sabalenka in a third set tiebreaker, and Strycova taking out Watson (why are they still wasting WCs on her?).
For some reason also in Birmingham Venus is playing doubles with UK scrub Harriet Dart? You'd think she wouldn't want to test her body like that at this stage.

Tomljanovic def. Puig(!)
Bencic def. Peterson.

Norrie is cute and has an interesting background. He was born in South Africa to Scottish and Welsh parents. He moved to New Zealand and represented it in tennis. According to Wikipedia “Norrie studied sociology on a scholarship at Texas Christian University (TCU) and joined the Horned Frogs university team, where he became the top-ranked male college tennis player in the US”.
by Anonymous | reply 428 | June 18, 2019 2:41 AM |
Anderson seems nice. His game just isn't that interesting. He hits with enough pace and power and consistency to beat most players but comes up short again the big 3 usually. He doesn't hit quite big enough to hit them off the court but he's also not consistent enough and often they'll get him to make errors. He moves well for his height but obviously that limits him from being super fast

Spears and Dart played against each other in doubles in Birmingham. Willi, which from a certain point of view is a synonym for cock, also played in the quartet with the phallic Spears and Dart.
by Anonymous | reply 434 | June 18, 2019 4:49 AM |
Dart let Venus down a little in that match. Her serve got broken 3 times (Venus was not broken at all). But she was good in the tiebreakers. I still think it's the weirdest pairing I can think of, they looked hilarious together on the court in a 'david and goliath' kind of way. Dart got hit really hard by Spears' smash (on the wrist).
Has anybody been keeping up with Sacha "bisexual" Bajin? He's releasing a coaching book (in Japanese for some reason) about his partnership with Osaka. There are excerpts and interviews on the WTA website, and they sound VERY stalkerish. He keeps repeating that he hopes they will work together again and is open to a reunion. Are we sure they didn't have a relationship of some sort? Osaka obviously got word about it but didn't participate in the article because she posted some cryptic 'leave me be' type messages on her second instagram account. Here is just one quote from Bajin:
"I miss her quiet personality, her shy smile that comes through, her sarcasm. I miss driving from my home in Palm Beach Gardens to the Chris Evert Academy in Boca Raton in Florida, where we trained. More than anything, I'm going to miss talking to her. I really care about Naomi and think she's a super sweet girl."
His current pupil, Kristina '25 languages' Mladonna, will have plenty of time to translate the book from Japanese into English as she just lost in the first round of Birmingham to Rodina (who has only won 3 matches all year and is a 30 year old mother).

Like I said, Azarenka screwed again. She has to fix that serve (-6 diff. today, Garcia was +7) because it puts too much stress on the rest her game and it starts to break down. Also, she was an abysmal 29% on 2nd serve returns in the 3rd set after being 86% and 60% in the 1st and 2nd sets, respectively. That's not going to win you any matches. by Anonymous | reply 453 | June 18, 2019 7:25 PM |
Birmingham probably wouldn’t give her a WC, lol. They already gave one to Venus and the rest to their home players. The UK grass tournaments are the only hope for the LTA to develop their scrubby players. You know they’re shitting bricks thinking of how they’re going to keep afloat and promote the sport when Murray (the Scot) and Konta (the Hungarian Australian) retire.
The press have already turned on Katie Boulter and nobody really likes Edmund or Norrie (who are both more South African than British). It’s a big priority for them. I’m 100% sure they paid Venus a big bonus to play doubles with Harriet Dart, to boost her profile and confidence. Venus had never met that girl lol, her only other doubles partners have been Serena, Wozniacki (once) and Madison Keys (once).
On the other hand the small Mallorca tournament could have used a bigger star and horny old Tio Toni was willing to pay Sharapova the $$$ to boost interest.
There is no other reason than that they didn't want her. Meldonia has won Birmingham (twice?) and went on to win Wimbledon that year, it’s also worth significantly more prize money and ranking points (she’s currently in the low 80s I think) and a stronger draw, if it is indeed matchplay she wants. Too bad they didn't rig the draw for her like St Petersburg did, because she now plays Angie Kerber in the next round.

World #1 Naomi Osucker lost to Putin's daughter earlier in Birmingham. Putin had only won 4 grass matches in her entire career before this one.
Looks like Barty will be #1 at the end of the week, and i'm thinking nobody will be happier than Naomi.

by Anonymous | reply 520 | June 20, 2019 6:32 PM |
Unless he improves a lot i think Tsitsipas will lose again against Felix, on clay it would be a different story but Felix seems to be more comfortable on grass than Stefanos
by Anonymous | reply 521 | June 20, 2019 6:38 PM |
This also speaks well to Felix's stamina for GS matches in that he got through five sets of tennis today quite nicely.
by Anonymous | reply 522 | June 20, 2019 7:01 PM |
Osaka admits she isn't a grass player but that excuse doesn't really fly... Putin had only ever won 4 matches on the surface in her entire career before today. Naomi also skipped out of her press conference (does this mean she has to pay a fine or is that only at the slams?).
In Mallorca also a good in for Kerber over Drugapova. I guess she still hasn't found a replacement treatment for her family history of diabetes.
Misery and Lopez win their doubles match over the #1 seeds. The UK press are blowing their load.

Seeds holding up well in Mallorca. Strong field for a lower-tier grass event in the mediterranean when most are preparing for Wimbledon. QFs are set:
[1] Kerber vs. [6] Garcia (who is quietly on a 7 match win streak)
[3] Bencic vs. [5] Anisimova
[7] Kenin vs. [4] Mertens
[2] Sevastova vs. Wang Yafan

And not so well in Birmingham. QFs:
Putin's daugher vs [8] Julia Goerges
Jelena Oyster-Pancake vs Petra Martic
Barbie Strycova vs Kristyna Pliskbot
Granny Vee vs [2] Ash Barty

[3] Khachanov vs Berettini (who like Garcia is also on a 7 match win streak)
[2] Flopos Zverev vs Elf Goffin

[1] Tsitsipas vs [8] FAA

The only thing that will make up for Nadal winning his 12th French Open will be if he loses by the 3rd Round at Wimbledon.
It's disappointing Osaka has now joined the WTA ranks of win a Slam (or two in her case) then start to fall apart mentally. None of the women can sustain. Barty should be on a high from her French Open win, and she's got a good game for the grass. I'm curious how she will perform at Wimbledon.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | June 21, 2019 1:23 PM |
R522: He is 19, what he did is pretty normal at his age, what would be difficult is to keep that level round after round on a GS.
The problem with Felix right now is that he makes some absurd mistakes in parts of his matches, that could cost him sets on a GS, and after several rounds things can get way more difficult.
Anyway, he is very consistent and has a good mentality, but we need to watch him on several GS before judge his potential performances. Zverev was really great outside GS for a good while, but that never translated in good results at GS
by Anonymous | reply 546 | June 21, 2019 1:29 PM |
Tsitsipas and serving for staying on the set are two things that don't mix well.
He is losing his serve almost everytime he is in that situation and it's starting to be worrying

by Anonymous | reply 549 | June 21, 2019 2:25 PM |
Tsitsipas never won a set against FAA, not in juniors neither as pros, and that being clearly a better player than Felix right now. Once Felix will rise his level (which will happen sooner than later) it would get worse.
Anyway, Stefanos has a bigger problem than Felix being a bad match up, he is failing with his serve everytime he is under pressure. That didn't happen on clay, but it happened on grass in three of his four matches
by Anonymous | reply 550 | June 21, 2019 2:26 PM |
Not my point, R546--I was simply stating that Felix did well getting through five sets of tennis as a point of comparison since he's never been through a GS match in the big boy league. Whether that translates to GS success, we'll see.
Kudos to him for making quick work of Tsitsipas today.

Hottest player on tour aka Coric retired. What happened? Will he be ready for Wimbledon?
by Anonymous | reply 567 | June 21, 2019 7:12 PM |
R567 What happened is he needs to learn to close out matches earlier than a 3rd set tiebreaker. These chokes are fucking up his match rhythm.
Really though he's been having a rough year, I think because he didn't get a proper off season. Everyone else was resting and then training but he had health issues and a much longer season than others. First he went to London to be ready as an alternate for the ATP finals (training but not actually getting to play). Then he slogged it out to help Croatia win Davis Cup, and then a small injury.
This year he's actually been hanging in there and is finally now getting the results you'd expect from someone with his ranking. If he had been as healthy and prepared as he was last year, he might be making a push and actually winning those matches though and making the next step. Hopefully he's healed up for Wimbledon. I need to see that ass in white shorts.
