Jay Hernandez Cast As Thomas Magnum In CBS Reboot Pilot

‘Magnum P.I.’: Jay Hernandez Cast As Thomas Magnum In CBS’ Reboot Pilot

by Nellie Andreeva, February 20, 2018 11:45am

Jay Hernandez has been tapped to play Thomas Magnum, the lead in CBS’ drama pilot Magnum P.I.

CBS had been looking to add a twist to the classic character played by Tom Selleck in the original series, which had been conceived as diverse in the reboot, with the network setting out to find a non-white actor for the role.

The Magnum P.I. pilot, from Peter Lenkov, Davis Entertainment, CBS TV Studios and Universal TV Studios, was co-written by Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim, with Justin Lin set to direct.

The reboot follows Thomas Magnum (Hernandez), a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. With help from fellow vets Theodore “TC” Calvin and Orville “Rick” Wright, as well as that of disavowed former MI:6 agent Juliet Higgins, Magnum takes on the cases no one else will, helping those who have no one else to turn to.

Lenkov and Guggenheim executive produce with John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment as well as Lin and Danielle Woodrow via Lin’s Perfect Storm Entertainment.

Landing Hernandez is a get for CBS as casting the role was challenging because the series is slated to film in Hawaii. Hernandez recently co-starred in the hit features Suicide Squad, Bad Moms and sequel A Bad Moms Christmas, along with Netflix’s Bright. He also recurred on the ABC series Scandal.

Hernandez is repped by ICM Partners, Alchemy Entertainment and Fuller Law.

Jay is really cute and doesn't age at all. Im glad he will be on TV again.

by Anonymousreply 2February 20, 2018 8:55 PM

What's with all the reboots? They're never better than the original.

by Anonymousreply 4February 20, 2018 9:09 PM

CBS is becoming the hot guy network.

by Anonymousreply 5February 20, 2018 9:15 PM

They don't mention the Higgins character?

by Anonymousreply 6February 20, 2018 9:19 PM

Higgins will now be disavowed former MI:6 agent Juliet Higgins

by Anonymousreply 7February 20, 2018 9:28 PM

I can already see a Magnum, PI / Hawaii 5-O crossover!

by Anonymousreply 8February 20, 2018 9:40 PM

He's got too much Indian blood in him.

by Anonymousreply 9February 20, 2018 9:44 PM

I don't care that Magnum is latino, but I'd prefer a bit less twinky.

Amaury Nolasco, for example, kind of a Puerto Rican Jason Statham.

IMDB Personal Quotes (2)
"It was cool to be around that many Latinos, because when I'm on set it's usually white or whatever. It's no big deal, but to be around Mexicans and Latins, it's a little bit closer to family, more camaraderie. It's a different feeling, and it was cool to see that, and to realize that there actually is a part of Hollywood that is Latin" - referring to the set of American Family (2002).
When I first started, there was nothing. There were no Latin roles, and that's the only thing that they'll see you as unless you can convince them otherwise.

I guess this Magnum will spend his time protecting dreamers, and confronting rich white landlords.

by Anonymousreply 11February 20, 2018 9:58 PM

I thought Jay Hernandez was a gay makeup artist with a cosmetic line on QVC?

by Anonymousreply 13February 20, 2018 10:55 PM

If he doesn't have a mustache, wear Hawaiian shirts with very short khaki shorts, and drive a red Ferrari ... I won't watch.

What am I saying? I won't watch no matter what.

by Anonymousreply 14February 20, 2018 10:59 PM

remember in the 70's when posters were all around in nyc sayin what a gay tom selleck was

then he got married quick

many rumors

r.i.p. jay::::gr8 actor

by Anonymousreply 15February 20, 2018 11:03 PM
I thought Jay Hernandez was a gay makeup artist with a cosmetic line on QVC?

I think that's Jay Manuel?

by Anonymousreply 16February 20, 2018 11:04 PM

r.i.p. mean real incredible penis (probably....he hot)

by Anonymousreply 17February 20, 2018 11:04 PM

This is bullshit and isn’t a true reboot. A Latino? Please. Might as well call it Melendez P.I. and have it take in Mexico. Disappointed.

by Anonymousreply 18February 20, 2018 11:15 PM

Jay is cute but I'm tired of reboots.

R18 is literal scum.

by Anonymousreply 19February 20, 2018 11:27 PM
The reboot follows Thomas Magnum (Hernandez), a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan

Afganistan. How is this going to work? The original Thomas Magnum spoke Vietnamese and made trips to “Little Saigon” for various reasons, is the reboot going to have a “Little Kabul” or something like that?

I admit my knowledge of the original show is limited to binge watching the first few seasons over the course of a rainy weekend last fall so I don’t know a whole, whole lot and the maybe the show relied less on the Saigon/Vietnamese connection and maybe this isn’t even a big deal.

by Anonymousreply 20February 20, 2018 11:31 PM

It'll be interesting to see if this will be successful in the ratings. Some reboots work and some don't. As a fan of the original I'm willing to give it a try just to see what it's like . But of course nothing can compare to the original. But who knows, I might end up actually liking it. lol

by Anonymousreply 21February 20, 2018 11:33 PM
This is bullshit and isn’t a true reboot.

Reboot - I don't think this means what you think it means.

by Anonymousreply 22February 20, 2018 11:36 PM
I don't care that Magnum is latino, but I'd prefer a bit less twinky.

I need to know what Jay's secret is, since he's still looking like a twink at 40!

by Anonymousreply 23February 21, 2018 12:36 AM

Tom Selleck is on the Board of Directors of the NRA!

He is dead to me.

by Anonymousreply 24February 21, 2018 12:47 AM

If only they'd cast Tyler Hoechlin.

Higgins will be black, count on it.

by Anonymousreply 26February 21, 2018 12:57 AM

Yeah, this is going to fail. The people that would even look at a Magum reboot on CBS are old white guys and some of their wives. They picked an aged latino twink. They might pick up a few gay guys but their main audience will just stick with the white dudes on all the NCIS shows and Hawaii 5-0. Does not compute.

They're going to make Higgins a black guy and the black character that flew the helicopter in the original a blonde woman. Just watch.

by Anonymousreply 27February 21, 2018 1:07 AM
Might as well call it Melendez P.I.

Despite r19's tantrum, what would be so terrible with that idea. Recasting purely for the sake of "diversity" is patronizing, plus there is little to no way he will ever satisfy people who watched the original. Melendez P.I. could blaze its own trail without comparisons where it will inevitibly fall short.

by Anonymousreply 28February 21, 2018 1:24 AM

Doesn't CBS already have the Hawaii 5-O and MacGyver remakes? Anything else? Why not just have a nostalgia night featuring nothing but remakes/reboots?

by Anonymousreply 30February 21, 2018 5:25 AM

Jay is hot, gave me a total boner in Bad Moms.

by Anonymousreply 31February 21, 2018 5:35 AM

Yeah, I'm not a fan of reboots that change ethnicities. It's contrived and pandering to me. Sorry, not sorry. Why not just add new ethnic characters?

btw save the "finger-wagging"....my opinion is purely based on source material. NOTHING more.

by Anonymousreply 32February 21, 2018 12:58 PM

Wait...Selleck isn't ethnic but...you know what I'm saying.

by Anonymousreply 33February 21, 2018 1:00 PM

NBC needs to reboot Suddenly Susan, Veronica's Closet, Caroline in The City and Jesse for a Must See Women's Wednesday!

by Anonymousreply 34February 21, 2018 1:16 PM
I need to know what Jay's secret is, since he's still looking like a twink at 40!

There is a difference between being a twink, looking like a twink, and being twinky.

by Anonymousreply 35February 21, 2018 1:32 PM

What are his skin care secrets?

by Anonymousreply 36February 21, 2018 1:37 PM

They are not making Higgins black. Higgins will now be Juliet Higgins, a disavowed former MI:6 agent .

by Anonymousreply 37February 21, 2018 3:19 PM

It gonna flop sooooooooooo hard.

by Anonymousreply 38February 21, 2018 4:02 PM

....zzzzzzzz....

Hollywood is creatively bankrupt.

by Anonymousreply 39February 21, 2018 4:13 PM

R25 That would have been awesome but he's been a little preoccupied.

by Anonymousreply 40February 21, 2018 4:45 PM

The new Higgins has been announced.

British actress Perdita Weeks. Weeks’ recent TV credits include a recurring role on Penny Dreadful, The Tudors, and a guest spot on Grantchester.

And The Tudors proved she looks a heck of a lot better naked then John Hillerman.

There is only one Magnum.

Why can't these hot shot young Hollywood writers come up with something new, instead of ripping off the oldies.

Blue Bloods is like Magnum all grown up.

We don't need Hernandez.

by Anonymousreply 42March 2, 2018 10:14 PM
What are his skin care secrets?

He showers in cum.

by Anonymousreply 44March 2, 2018 11:31 PM

Sine they're changing the principals--hero is now latino, the former black guy is now a woman, etc.--why reboot an old TV show that nobody cares about? Why not just start afresh?

Was there something in the original Magnum that the network felt they had to preserve? Because I remember those old shows, and the only reason people watched them was because of Tom Selleck's hotness. There was nothing else interesting in it, unless it was Higgins' clipped accent and starchy behavior.

Does the network think there's something magical in the Magnum title? Because there isn't. If this new show is a hit, it will be because it's new, not because it pretends to hark back something in the past.

by Anonymousreply 45March 2, 2018 11:48 PM

^^^hark back TO something in the past.

by Anonymousreply 46March 2, 2018 11:48 PM

It's disappointing to read the racist quote he made that he prefers to be around hispanics.

by Anonymousreply 47March 3, 2018 12:31 AM

Who prefers to be around Hispanics, R47?

by Anonymousreply 48March 3, 2018 12:35 AM

Why would anyone watch the reboot of Magnum when they can watch Selleck on the new season of Blue Bloods, or Blue Blood reruns all day on Thursdays on ION TV?

[bold]‘Magnum P.I.’: Zachary Knighton To Play Rick In CBS Reboot Pilot[/bold]
Happy Endings alum Zachary Knighton is set as a lead, Rick Wright, opposite star Jay Hernandez and Perdita Weeks, in CBS’ Magnum P.I. pilot from Peter Lenkov, Davis Entertainment, CBS TV Studios and Universal TV Studios.
A former door gunner with the Marines, Rick (Knighton) now runs Oahu’s coolest nightclub. According to Magnum, Rick is well connected – if you want something on the island, Rick is the man to see. He is one of Magnum’s friends who were all POWs in Iraq together. In the original series, the role was played by Larry Manetti.

I guess that movie career didn't pay off.

by Anonymousreply 51May 12, 2018 3:02 AM

The only reason the original Magnum P.I. was such a hit was because Tom Selleck made pussies wet all across America. Nobody watched that show for the great writing or acting. I can't see magic happening twice with the new guy.

by Anonymousreply 52May 12, 2018 3:49 AM

The article R50 quotes is incorrect. Rick was not a POW, although he did serve three tours just as Magnum and T.C. did. Just a little something for your edification.

by Anonymousreply 53May 12, 2018 5:10 AM

Couldn't they find a young tall Hunky Latino?

Jay had his day with the Hostel movie, but that was along time ago. How tall is Jay ? He looks short.

by Anonymousreply 54May 12, 2018 5:15 AM

I disagree, R52. My grandfather watched Magnum and the like. All the manly men watched Magnum. It gave them something to watch after Mannix and Columbo were cancelled. It’s just what he-men of the universe did back in their day.

by Anonymousreply 56May 12, 2018 5:44 AM

Why don't they cast Tom Cruise as Magnum? He's tall and muscular and manly looking and his name is Tom.

by Anonymousreply 57May 12, 2018 9:22 AM

Literally have not thought of this guy since Crazy/Beautiful, but he's still very good-looking.

by Anonymousreply 58May 12, 2018 10:34 AM

I thought Tom Selleck dies of AIDs years ago!

by Anonymousreply 59May 12, 2018 10:53 AM

Isn't he already on The Good Doctor?

by Anonymousreply 60May 12, 2018 11:03 AM

Are Apollo and Zeus going to be played by Chihuahuas?

by Anonymousreply 61May 12, 2018 11:08 AM

The original was all about Tom Selleck's appeal. Nobody gives a crap about Jay Hernandez.

by Anonymousreply 62May 12, 2018 11:16 AM

The original really was about the universal charisma Selleck seemed to have. I didn't see it but his TVQ was quite high with men and women. I think they'd have to go with a star athlete or similar to recreate that kind of casting.

by Anonymousreply 63May 12, 2018 11:20 AM

YouTube link. Hernandez is so gorgeous but the show looks cheap to me.

by Anonymousreply 66May 17, 2018 12:26 PM

Never be as erotic as the original, shirtless, hariry chest, short shorts. Even Speedos. For a teenage gayling in the 80s....

by Anonymousreply 67May 17, 2018 12:42 PM

Quick mention of "Five-Oh" in the clip at R65 so I'm already anticipating a crossover

by Anonymousreply 68May 18, 2018 7:37 AM

Any love for the show? I know it's fluff, but it grows on me. Jay Hernandez fits the role perfectly, imho. Don't care much for the starting love/hate relationship with Higgins. They should just make her a lesbian, so a relationship with Magnum is off the table. If they try a Who's the Boss thing, I might jump ship.

The show is entertaining. Nothing high brow but nice television to escape from the world. Jay is hot.

I confuse him with Nicholas Gonzalez (who also looks a little like Matthew Dempsey in the pic below).

I’m enjoying it for the escapist eye candy that it is. Also rewatching the original Magnum from the 80s. I hope they get Jay into some short-shorts soon- it would be nice to see how his thighs compare to young Tom Selleck’s.

by Anonymousreply 73October 11, 2018 8:13 AM

Short-shorts are no more.

by Anonymousreply 74October 11, 2018 12:51 PM

But Mexicans don’t live in Hawaii

by Anonymousreply 75October 11, 2018 2:20 PM

Magnum PI is white. Why would they cast an actor who isn't white in a white role? Would they cast Matt Damon as Malcolm X or Will Smith as Ho Chi Minh?

R72 He was hot on The OC.

Lmao the show is already on?! That can’t be good—I never heard of this and nobody talks about it.

Still on R78. Not doing so well, but not many stay home and watch the ol' boob tube on a Friday night.

by Anonymousreply 81December 23, 2018 5:16 AM

The show sucks is it's biggest problem.

by Anonymousreply 82December 23, 2018 5:37 AM

I watch it because I'm infatuated with Jay Hernandez. The storylines are meh but he brings something to the character besides his hotness.

by Anonymousreply 83December 23, 2018 5:48 AM

Me too R83. And if it's cancelled by CBS it will find a home on another 'network'.
